Edward Hicks and Pennsylvania Dutch- More Ideas

Because my winter kit focused on Pennsylvania Dutch style folk art and Edward Hicks, I have had some people ask for some more resources so they can learn more about Hicks and folk art. So in today's post I am including links to some resources you might find interesting.

Here are two lesson plans based on Edward Hicks:
(You may need to click through to the actual blog post if you are reading this in an email or reader since the Amazon links do not always show up.)

Here are some books on Amazon focusing on Pennsylvania Dutch:

I hope you find something you can use in these links. As always feel free to leave any additional suggestions in the comments section.

And I still have plenty of winter kits left, so if you are looking to get started in a study of Edward Hicks and the Pennsylvania Dutch folk art style, be sure to check it out. In all there are 3 handicraft projects, 3 notebooking pages, an art print with corresponding drawing project, a complete lapbook and a nature journal focusing on mammals in this kit!

Igor Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring

Here is another spring themed piece of music that I want to share with you all. This one is Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring." It is actually from rather shocking ballet which Stravinsky wrote, but I love how powerful and dramatic this piece is. It would be interesting to share this movement with your children and to discuss any images of spring that may come to mind as you listen.

As you listen you might want to try this idea from my mom's blog: Coloring to Classical Music.

If you would like to learn more about Stravinsky you can check out a biography here.

A set from the ballet- scene 1.

If you are interested in purchasing a children's biography book for Stravinsky, here are two as well as two CDs from Amazon which include more movements from The Rite of Spring.

Enjoy! I would love to hear any of your or your children's response to this piece. If you enjoyed this movement, you might want to check out another Stravinsky favorite: The Firebird- Infernal Dance. (I love how this video shows the different instruments as they play. Can you name them all?)

A Quick Book Recommendation

I just remembered that my mom gave me this book when I told her I was putting together a mini unit study about clouds in art. It is a great resource if after looking at all the wonderful ways artists have seen and painted clouds you are inspired to learn a little more about how to draw clouds yourself.

If you haven't already, you can check out my Clouds Art Show here and my mini unit study here.

Some Fall Reading Ideas

When I was in preschool we read the book Freddie the Leaf (which when I read as an adult made me a little sad). We then went out to the big tree outside and one of the teachers drew a face on one of the leaves way up in the tree. It was our own Freddie. Every day we would trek outside to see if Freddie was still there. I remember the day Freddie fell. We all dug through all the leaves until we found him. Then we hung him up on the wall inside. Whenever I see that book to this day I remember those autumn days. Here are a few fall book recommendations.

Check your local library for some of these books. Just a little something to help us all get in the autumn mood.
