February 9th, CPSIA and Hearts and Trees

Because my kits are designed for children under the age of 12 I am going to be affected by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act which comes into affect February 9, 2009. Unless there is some legislation change, I possibly will no longer be able to sell my art, handicraft and nature study kits after that date.

In the coming weeks I am going to try to sell all of my Winter 2008 kits. If you are at all interested in purchasing a kit I suggest you do so very soon.

Hearts and Trees will still continue to operate after February 9th. I am going to focus more on PDF downloads like the ones I am already selling, instead of the arts and crafts kits. I have a lot of ideas, and hopefully in time I will be able to sell my kits again. I thank everyone who has supported my blog and my business in the past.

Amanda,
I do hope you will persevere in this.. perhaps with all the ideas and written directions and list to purchase? (not as easy for us busy moms, I know)

And, wondering if you have previous kits still available for sale?

Thanks!
Melanie

While I have never purchased from you, it is awful that you will no longer be able to supply thoughtful art projects to the creatively challenged people in the world!

Oh, that's really too bad. We love our winter kit we purchased from you. (In fact, my daughter is doing some things from it as I type this!) I hope the law is changed to accomodate small business. I'm sure some of the places I buy toys from will be affected.

Sorry to hear this Amanda! You have done a wonderful job with your kits. We'll certainly keep up with ordering your pdf's when the time comes.

I hope people will lobby their Congressman and Senators for changes. Documenting how much business this will lose for small businesses like yours may help! I'm sad for you--your initiative in doing the kits is to be rewarded!

I am so sorry to hear you will be "closing the doors". I am praying that wisdom will previal, and that the legislation will be amended appropriately.

In Him, we have HOPE !

Please keep up with the PDFs!
They may not be ideal, but they are still better than nothing.

My dd(11) just started her first kit today and she LOVES it! I have two teenagers now and don't have the time to put things together like when they were her age. Your kits are truly a blessing to us! I thought I was going to move away from Charlotte Mason's methods, but since you've done the leg work for me I can keep on.

I am so sorry that this is affecting you like this. That law just really stinks.

I can't place an order right now, but hope to before the 10th. We have loved the kits we've gotten in the past.

Amanda, this is terrible! We will continue to purchase PDF's and will support your other ideas. I like Melanie's idea about making your plans, instructions and purchasing lists available for purchase.

Anticipating your new creative endeavors,
Paula

I really am praying this new law is repealed & quickly. It is putting far too many business out of business. While I had e-mailed my reps/senators, I'm actually planning to call them tomorrow. It's just getting ridiculous. I'm so sorry this is affecting you as well. I so love your kits!

Amanda, we have really enjoyed your kits. I am still holding out hope that changes will be made. We live in an area where there are no places to find craft material. Even our SuperWalmart has stopped carrying them. I loved getting everything we needed from you. Still I look forward to seeing what you will do next.

Dear Amanda,

I have heard tell that this law was simply poorly written and as a result accidentally affects more people than it intended.

It will be my prayer that the Lord will help those working to make corrections to have success quickly! : )

I personally wanted to thank you for all you do. In fact, I just posted about a nature walk our family did as we were inspired by your checklist:

It was delightful.

Thank you again!

Blessings!

Are you absolutely certain you are affected by this law? Did you get a letter specifically or call to find out?

I'm just curious if small businesses are basing this upon assumption based on the wording of the law or based on specifically being contaced in some form. If not, I would look into it deeper before making any decisions.

The law talks about testing from a manufacturers level...though you put together these kits, ultimately, you buy the supplies from the store. The manufacturers who MAKE these items are the ones responsible. You don't make the fabric, you piece them together. I would seriously look further into this. :)

So sorry to hear you will stop putting the kits together. I recently bought the winter kit and my children have enjoyed it so very much!

Hopefully the law will be modified and you can continue with all the wonderful ideas you have.

Thank you!
